Home / Family law

Separating is hard enough. The legal part shouldn’t be.

We help you sort out parenting, support and property with as little conflict as possible. Most of our files settle without a trial. When one doesn’t, we’re ready for court.

What we help with

Married or common-law, with or without children, amicable or not.

  • Separation agreementsA written agreement on parenting, support and property that lets you both move on without court.
  • Parenting time and decision-makingSchedules, holidays, schools and relocation, built around your children rather than the conflict.
  • Child supportCalculated under the Federal Child Support Guidelines, including special expenses like daycare and activities.
  • Spousal supportWhether it’s owed, how much and for how long, for the person paying or receiving.
  • Property and the matrimonial homeEqualization of net family property, pensions, businesses and who keeps the house.
  • Divorce and court applicationsUncontested divorces, urgent motions and full court proceedings when settlement isn’t possible.

How fees work

Family law can’t be done on contingency in Ontario, so we make costs predictable instead.

Fixed fees for common steps

Separation agreements, uncontested divorces and agreement reviews are quoted as a flat fee on your first call.

Clear hourly billing for court work

Contested matters are billed hourly with a written estimate for each stage and monthly statements you can actually read.

Timing matters here too. Property equalization claims generally must be made within six years of separation or two years of a divorce, whichever comes first.

Common questions

Do we have to go to court?
Usually not. Most separations are resolved through negotiation, mediation or collaborative law. Court is the fallback when the other side won’t engage or there’s a safety concern.
We weren’t married. Does family law still apply?
Yes for parenting and support. Property rules are different for common-law couples in Ontario, so it’s worth getting advice early.
Should I move out of the house?
Talk to a lawyer first. Leaving can affect parenting arrangements and your position on the home. We can usually advise within a day.
What if I’m worried about my safety?
Tell us on the first call. We can seek urgent orders, including restraining orders and exclusive possession of the home. If you’re in danger now, call 911.
